Tips to deal with procrastination

Filed under: Procrastination — Kava @ 12:33 pm

You know you are a procrastinator and you have put off dealing with it as long as possible.  Now that you are determined to conquer procrastination, how do you start?

Enlist your friends.  Honestly telling them about the problem you are having tackling a specific project may have two beneficial results.  First, they will realize that you have to work and will not interrupt you during a designated time period.  Secondly, some of your peers may have a similar problem and you can form a type of support group; just don’t meet during work hours.

Create a workspace where it is possible to actually work.  Remove clutter from the space and put in a chair that offers support, but not maximum comfort.  Assemble the tools that you need to begin the job.  Remember that preparing the workplace is often a high level of procrastination, whereby weeks can be spent assembling tools that may never be required.  To further avoid this pitfall, setting up your workplace should not be done when there is an actual task at hand.  If you are writing a job evaluation, you need your computer in order to begin, but the printer does not have to be hooked up yet. If you are painting a chest of drawers, you need the material to prepare the surface, not the paint, brushes and drawer handles.  Just assemble what you need to get started.

Take the next step and get started.  Just make a dent.  Often the project, because of procrastination, has grown out of proportion and looms overly large.  As soon as an attempt to start is made, the job may return to normal size and look more approachable.  Even if you just write the title to the report, or place a drop cloth under the chest, you have done something, which makes the next step easier.  It may take a few minor steps before you can begin the task in earnest.  What is not acceptable is to continue to put things off until the “right time”.

Accept that it will never be the “right time” and evaluate your schedule.  Determine when you have free time and are still alert.  If you are a morning person, set aside 7am to noon and put the answering machine on.  Since your friends should already have been alerted to avoid you during this time, any phone calls will likely be from telemarketers anyway.

The next point regarding a “right time” arises when, despite your best efforts, you have still managed to procrastinate the morning away.  Only 45 minutes remain before your noon lunch date.  The temptation arises to think that there is not enough time to accomplish anything.  Again, just get something done, however small.

You see the pattern by now.  The key to combating procrastination is to do something, however small, that breaks the non-productive cycle. As you take these steps, you are creating habits regarding place, time, and conditions that will make it easier to accomplish something each time you begin to work.   Conquering procrastination is the process of replacing bad work habits with good ones.

Stop Procrastination

Filed under: Procrastination — JoshN @ 7:33 am

Procrastination is a habit and a mental attitude.  To break the habit we must confront the non-productive attitudes that we entertain and take action to start the project in spite of them.  People often use several well-known excuses to procrastinate.  These time worn reasons include not having enough time or the right work space or tools to attempt the job.  Procrastinators build a framework of ideal conditions that should be met before work can begin.  The first step in stopping procrastination is to confront the elements of this structure and dismantle them.

One favourite misconception procrastinators entertain about themselves is that they put things off until the last minute because they work well under pressure.   If this is really true, create pressure for yourself.  Set an arbitrary deadline and meet it, or suffer the consequences. If you have all day to complete a task but a date to meet a friend at the gym at noon, make yourself finish the task before the appointment, with the consequence that you will have to forego the gym if you do not finish.  Under this pressure, you are certain to get something done.  The point it, set your own deadlines and meet them.

Another favorite form of procrastination is to demand an ideal workplace before starting the job.  Confront this head-on as a self-deceptive ploy to postpone.  Nearly everything but brain surgery can be accomplished in a messy environment.  Actually, emergency medics perform this on location, so you should be able to work with some clutter.  Promise yourself that you will make the perfect office after you finish your taxes, clear away enough clutter to use the desk and get started.

People often procrastinate by telling themselves that they do not have enough time on this particular day to finish the project.  Take this for what it is, an excuse to put things off.  The project does not have to be completed in one day, it has to be started.  Most things that can be completed in eight hours can also be done in 8 one-hour segments.  It may not be ideal or as efficient, but the main tool in fighting procrastination is to learn to stop looking for the ideal.  As you lay this to rest and build better work habits, your efficiency will improve.

Often we postpone a project because we feel that we need more information.  Unless you are a complete novice on the issues involved, you can start by outlining what you do know and listing what you need to learn.  If you need to replant the flower bed but don’t know what plants thrive in your area, you can clear away the debris and prepare the soil prior to sitting down with flower brochures and browsing.

Finally, to stop procrastination you must cope with needs for perfection.  If cannot begin painting a portrait of your son because you don’t see a perfect result, put a draft outline on the canvas.  You can paint over a background and make corrections later.  Don’t anticipate the final product before you begin, a favorite route of procrastinators.  Start with a general idea and work to refine it.

Regardless of the type of project, procrastination is fed by the excuses we make for not taking action.  Procrastination is stopped when we begin to argue with these excuses and eliminate them.

Spend your free time wisely

Filed under: Discipline, Time management — Kava @ 11:12 am

In today’s fast paced, high stress world people are working longer hours than ever, and often collapse at day’s end in front of the television to relax enough to begin again in the morning.  However, television watching, for most people, does not really lower stress. Studies show that TV viewing in excess of an hour or so actually creates stress and, especially in women, may lead to depression.  Most individuals are unaware that incorporating some exercise into their end of will make them more energetic since it increases energy and stamina levels.

At first it may be hard, but in the long run using your free time wisely will have health and emotional benefits.  Begin by defining what elements constitute using your free time to your best advantage.

Wise use of leisure time does not mean getting an advanced degree, although the mental stimulation gained through education is unbeatable in keeping your mind active.  Learning new things nearly always adds a spark to your daily life, especially if it is a favorite topic, such as sport, fashion, or art.  Also, browse your bookstore or library to find books on your interests.  Try to replace a half hour TV watching with reading.  .

It is very well advised to use free time to reduce stress, which takes a toll on health, physically and mentally. Stress is the body’s adrenal gland hormonal “fight or flight” reaction stuck in high gear. With continued stress, both adrenalin and cortisol hormone levels remain high, contributing to the development of heart disease, hypertension and depression.  Many ways of combating stress revolve around distracting one’s mind from the everyday worries and returning it to the things in life that are enriching.  The foremost of these is other people.

It is estimated that in the United States currently, many individuals have as few as 2 good friends.  Long work hours and car commutes act to isolate people.  This isolation is deadly.  Find ways to congregate with people at the end of the day and on weekends.  Often this can be best done by combining activities, such by joining a walking group to get both exercise and companionship.  Taking a class will stimulate your mind and allow you to meet others with similar interests.  Hobbies are great for reducing stress and provide another opportunity for social interaction.   Meditation and biofeedback are excellent ways to reduce stress and have actually demonstrated an ability to lower blood levels of bad hormones.

Using our free time to aid our overall health and well being may include these elements and Many more, such as going to concerts and spending time with family.  For many people, spirituality, whether in the form of organized religion or enjoying nature, is necessary to retain a sense of balance in life.  All of these activities are good uses of leisure time, as is taking in the occasional film or watching a few TV programs.  But overall, the key is to spend less free time being passive.  The best ways to use free time allow us to are to be mentally and physically active, spend some time out doors, and interact with other people on a regular basis.

Importance of credit history checking

Filed under: Salary — Kava @ 4:02 pm

Checking your credit history is very important. We live in a time where people can access your personal information through a variety of techniques very easily. If you fail to keep track of who has access to your personal information, you can fall victim to identity theft. When you check your credit history you can see exactly who you owe money to and who has tried to apply for credit in your name. Checking your credit history is not a very time consuming process either. It can be done very simply online, but make sure that you are using a reputable company to do so.

Some companies try to “spoof” or steal your information and sell it to identity theft scammers, the exact thing you are trying to prevent from happening! You are allowed one free credit report per year and you should take advantage of it. If you do not check your credit history you are allowing people to use your good credit for whatever they want. They can rack up thousands of dollars in charges that you did not authorize but that say your name on the bill.

It is only your fault if you do not check your credit as it is both easy and painless. If you do not pay attention to your financial records it is very easy for someone to come in and start stealing an enormous amount of money from you. Many people who have their identity stolen had great credit to start with and have to go through a very difficult process that takes a lot of time to get their good credit back. Just by paying attention to what comes in the mail and checking your credit report can save you an enormous amount of hassle in the future.

Remember checking your credit history is free once a year!

Using Bum Marketing for big online business

Filed under: Make money, SEO, Stress — Kava @ 1:01 am

Before you know how to use bum marketing to make money you will first have to know just what that involves doing. Basically it is writing and posting articles online and you will earn money for each by promoting products for websites of which you happen to be an affiliate of. It is easy and it easy enough for anyone to do, hence the name bum marketing.

Bum marketing is popular because it generates a consistent income that can be quite substantial and doesn’t take much time or effort it just requires you keep publishing articles. Using bum marketing, or posting articles to make money doesn’t even require much prior knowledge or experience. It will help to know a few things, though, such as how to write articles, how to post articles and understanding how affiliate marketing works. None of these are complex ideas, so even if you don’t know in the beginning you can learn what you have to in a very short period of time. One thing you should take time with is how keywords work, since they are what will really bring you higher page rankings and more traffic to the site that holds the product you are promoting. If this is done right, you will soon be able to reap the profits of your work.

Bum marketing is successful if you always keep in mind that target potential customers and product being sold. If this means writing more articles and making use of different keywords in each, then you should be able do this. The articles do not have to be long, just very specific and about your product. If you don’t think that you can write articles, that is not even a problem. There are many freelancers who can write them and who have experience in this industry. It will not cost you much money to have articles written for your bum marketing strategy, but you also get what you pay for.

Personal skill development using Internet

Filed under: Skill development — Kava @ 2:58 pm

The Internet is always expanding and if used correctly, you can also improve your own personal skills. There are many educational sources that offer a variety of classes on all different kinds of subjects over the internet, which makes it available for everyone who has a computer and high speed connection. Determining which course is best for you is not an easy task due to the sheer amount of sources available, so you will have to be sure of what you want and compare services before making a final decision.

Before choosing a course on personal skill development using Internet programs, you should first do some research and see what is available online. It also helps to have a general idea of what skill you want to develop beforehand. No matter what you want to develop, you should be able to find an online source for further education. Common personal skills developed using the internet include writing, web, programming, language and business marketing skills. Personal skill development is not just limited to that, though, and you can also find other things such as selling strategies, crafts and even leadership skills that can be advanced without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Once you know what you are going to further and have a list of online sources that can help you, you will then have to check out and compare all of the educational sites. Some have more extensive trainings and others are just very general. Your skill level is also important so you will have to choose between beginner or advanced classes. The price of the skill development course is also a factor. Some online training classes are from colleges and they can easily cost a couple of thousand, whereas other websites offer self-help and learning guidelines for free.

Turning a Hobby into a Business

Filed under: Make money — MerryS @ 2:45 pm

When many people hear the word ‘hobby’ they think of it as a small project that helps to pass the time, on a rainy afternoon. While that is true for some, there are countless individuals will turn into little hobby into a booming business. It really is possible to make a considerable profit doing something you love.

Of course the success won’t happen overnight. It will take planning and hard work just like any on the business, but with determination it will happen.

The greatest thing about turning a hobby into a business is that it probably won’t even seem like work. After all, you wouldn’t partake in your particular hobby if you didn’t enjoy doing it, right?

It is best to start out small and see how the business takes off. There is no use in investing a great deal of money into something that might not turn out to be profitable.

Research your market. If you are up against a great deal of competition, locally, consider selling your products online. The Internet provides you with a wonderful way to offer your goods to a much larger market… you even have the ability to go global, if desired.

Even know you are starting small there is no reason that you can’t think big!

Working with Family

Filed under: Advice, Common Sense — MerryS @ 6:48 pm

Have you made a decision to work with friends or family members? Many individuals find this to be a very enjoyable arrangement. However, there are countless others who find this situation to be problematic.

There are things you can do to make things run more smoothly. One of the most important things to remember is that there will be occasional disagreements no matter how hard you try to be accommodating. It’s just human nature.

In the beginning, you need to sit down and discuss things. It is much better to get things out in the open right from the start. Go over job responsibilities and tell your family member exactly what is expected from him. Explain that he will be treated just like any other employee.

If this will be a business partnership, discuss which areas he will be responsible for and the things you will be deciding on as a team. Go over things like vacation days, when he will be paid, insurance options, etc.

Unfortunately, many people who hire friends or family members are taking advantage of in some way. Don’t let this happen to you! If you are straight forward from the start, as to what is expected, things should run much more smoothly.

Taking Time Off

Filed under: Advice, Physical energy — MerryS @ 6:25 pm

Whether you are working for yourself or someone else, it is important that you take time off to relax. Constantly working or worry about your work can be very unhealthy.

Obviously, if you are working for someone else it can be more difficult to take time off. Chances are you will have to abide by a vacation schedule of some kind.

Many businesses allow their employees to ‘save up’ vacation days. It is actually better for you to take several mini vacations throughout the year, as opposed to one longer one. Even two or three days off can leave you feeling refreshed and revitalized… even if you vacation in your own backyard.

When you do take time off, don’t take your work home with you. Many individuals make that mistake. There is no point of trying to relax, when you bring the office home with you.

(If it’s absolutely necessary to get things done, while you are away, limit your work time to a couple of hours a day.)

If you work for yourself, it is usually much easier to take time off here and there. Try to occasionally schedule a four-day work week. You will be surprised how rested you will feel after three days off.

The First Rules of Cold Calling

Filed under: Effectiveness — MerryS @ 3:15 pm

Chances are, no matter what type of business you are running or involved with, it would benefit by cold calling. Cold calling is a method of marketing, which has been practiced successfully, for many years. It is the act of contacting someone that you’ve never spoken with before, an effort to gain their business.

Currently, most cold calling is done by telephone. However, there are still individuals who make their sales calls going door to door.

Telephone cold calling is more challenging today, because of the National Do Not Call Registry. Consumers, who have opted to add their telephone numbers to this list, cannot be contacted by any solicitor. Solicitors, disobeying this rule are subject to large fines.

Some business owners, who begin a cold calling campaign, go about things the wrong way. The main purpose of a cold call to set an in-person appointment to make a sale, the objective is NOT to make a sale over the phone.

The first thing that should be done, prior to any calls, is market research. Finding out all that you can about your target group can make or break a campaign. As the saying goes, ‘knowledge is power’. It certainly holds true in this case.

Zen Gardening – Desktop Style

Filed under: Success — MerryS @ 4:35 am

Acquiring wealth can sometimes be stressful. (It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it, right?) There are many ways to relieve stress. There are breathing exercises and squeeze balls and meditation techniques. But, have you ever though about playing in the sand… zen garden sand, that is.

Zen gardens originated in Japan, many MANY years ago. They have done an adequate job of relieving stress, all through the ages.

Making a desktop zen garden is very easy. In fact, only four things are needed. These four things are a tray, playground sand, small rocks and a miniature rake or small stick. No pail and shovel required.

The tray you choose should be shallow and compact enough to fit nicely on your desk. (A wooden serving tray is an excellent choice.)

Fill tray with sand, ½ inch to the top. Playground or sandbox sand is best because it has been filtered and contains no foreign debris. You can also use ‘sand art’ sand. It is available in a variety of colors. Choose different colors to correspond with different moods.

Adding the rocks, symbolize mountains. The sand symbolizes water.

Whenever you are feeling stressed, play in your garden. Re-arrange the rocks or use the stick as a pencil, of sorts. It’s always fun to write in the sand.

Why Self-Confidence is Important

Filed under: Advice, Confidence — MerryS @ 6:41 am

It you are interested in starting your own business or acquiring wealth, self confidence is important. Individuals who exhibit this trait are much more likely to succeed… in everything they do.

These same people will probably tell you that their road to success seemed less rocky, most of the time, simply because they never lost faith in their abilities.

When you are self-confident, others notice this. Potential business partners will usually be more apt to invest in your venture when you believe in yourself and what you can accomplish. Make it know to them that you are unstoppable and will deliver as promised.

Self confidence is important if and when you hit a roadblock. (We all know that no business is immune to them.) It will help you to bounce back quicker and stay on track, in regard to your original business plan.

These roadblocks might even be friends or family members who doubt your business ability and don’t want to see you get hurt. Do your best to reassure them that you are, indeed, self-confident and capable of handling problems that might come up.

This trait is equally important when it comes to other aspects of your life. Everything from relationships to education to your health and well-being is affected by your confidence level.

Improving Concentration

Filed under: Health, Howto — MerryS @ 7:01 am

If you are interested in generating wealth, you need to concentrate on your work. Concentrating on a business plan is important, as well.

There are many ways to improve concentration. Countless books, CD’s and audio tapes can guide you through the process or you can research these methods yourself. Type the phrase ‘improving concentration’ into your favorite search engine. You will be pleasantly surprised, by the results.

One of the best ways to do this is to eliminate all distractions, located within your working environment. Turn off the radio and television, close your office door and delay all unnecessary contact via telephone, etc.

Believe it or not, your concentration will probably improve when you are working in a room with adequate lighting. When the lighting is bad, you are subject to headaches, eye strain and added tension.

You want to avoid glaring, flickering, light. Optimum light is bright and even. Two 100 watt bulbs are usually adequate for the average size office.

It also helps if you are organized and vary your tasks, during any given day. You should get the proper amount of sleep, eat right and exercise regularly. All of these things can help to improve your overall concentration level.
