Positive attitude will help you

Filed under: Positive thinking — Kava @ 5:23 pm

When one is the depths of depression it is sometimes difficult to imagine you could feel any better. Your brain becomes conditioned to think thoughts like, “It doesn’t matter anyway” “Nobody cares how I feel” or “I’ll never be able to get this right”. Of course, on one level, this is all true. In the large scheme of things it probably doesn’t matter; people tend to care only about that they personally think and feel and you probably can’t if you think you can’t. Yet, a positive attitude is not about pretending a rosy future for yourself. It’s about living and enjoying life in the present.

If you allow yourself to think only of the negative and stressful aspects of life, your brain actually releases stress hormones into the bloodstream. If this is an infrequent occurrence, it’s normal and natural. But, if your body is trying to deal with a constant deluge of hormones telling it to get ready to run or fight, the heart will be affected. One of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease is constant or frequent stressful conditions.

Developing a positive mental attitude can be considered as a series of small steps toward a much happier and fulfilling lifestyle. Practice replacing negative thoughts and statements with positive ones. You can do this either by writing them down or by rephrasing them verbally. In other words, if you catch yourself thinking “I can’t get all this done by tonight” write down the negative words on the left column of a piece of paper, then on the right column write the words. “I can get quite a bit of this finished by tonight.” Then, cross out the negative thought. You may even want to black it out so you can no longer see the negative words. The final step is to say the positive words aloud.

By doing these steps repeatedly you are creating a new habit, one which looks on the positive side rather than the negative side.

If you want to brighten up your attitude, do something simple that you have enjoyed in the past. Take a child to the playground and it will recreate the delight you had in playing on the slide or monkey-bars. Ask an elderly friend or family member to tell you a story about their childhood. Listening to the story will give pleasure to both the listener and the storyteller.

Another way to find the positive is to laugh. Read a funny story, tell a joke or share a silly song with someone. Teach a child how to skip or turn a somersault. It’s a proven fact that laughing releases good hormones into the bloodstream in the same way that constant stress hormones hurt you.

You can also develop your positive attitude by helping someone else. There is always someone who is worse off than you, whether it’s financially, emotionally or physically. Even a helping hand to assist sick friend get a needed prescription will make you feel better about what you’ve accomplished.

Mind exercising for better memory and success

Filed under: Memory — Kava @ 5:10 pm

One of the best tools for improving your success rate in personal life or in your business life is a good memory. There is no one who doesn’t appreciate being called by name and asked about some minor detail of his or her life. For example, to remember that you met John Parker at a trade show a week ago and found out he lives in Detroit. John is a potential customer, imagine your rating with him if you not only remember his name, but the fact that he lives in Detroit. There are memory tricks which will allow you to remember facts like this and they are easily learned. The point is that whether or not John Parker becomes your customer, he will remember you because you took the time to personalize your comments to him.

There are many memory tricks you can use to remember facts, but underlying them all is a commitment to exercise your mind. Just like your biceps, if you exercise the brain, it gets stronger and responds more quickly. A recent study found that if you exercise vigorously you will have a better memory as well. Some scientists believe this is because of the increased blood flow through the circulatory system which carries oxygen to the brain as well as the muscles.

While the tricks are helpful in learning things like lists, and they exercise your brain, the underlying aid to mind exercise is to focus on what you’re looking at or thinking about.

A good overall memory strengthening exercise is crossword puzzles. These force you to focus and to look at things in different ways, both spatially and linguistically. Logic puzzles are also fun to do and strengthen memory.

Some easy ways to remember lists, even if it is a list of names include link, number shapes or rhyme systems.

With the link system, you tell yourself a story using the items or names on the list. The story doesn’t have to be rational, in fact, the sillier it is, and the more likely you are to remember the items on your list. The number shapes system also involves making up a story using the items you’ve memorized to stand for the numbers from zero through nine. Again, the more unique the story is the more likely you are to remember the numbers associated with it. The number rhyme system uses words that rhyme with the numbers to make up the story. For instance, you may decide that ‘four’ rhymes with ‘poor’ and picture the little man turning his pockets out in the classic Monopoly game.

Using John Parker in the example above you could consider this a kind of list. You need to remember ‘John’ ‘Parker’ and ‘Detroit.’ If you make up a story about a uniformed valet with a name badge in a valet parking lot with a Lion chasing him around the car, it should provide enough information to get his name right.

Two important things to remember when using the link, number shapes or number rhymes systems is to memorize your keywords ahead of time so that you are comfortable with them and they come automatically into your head when you see the items on a list. Second, focus your attention on the list and exercise your abilities each day. You can even ask someone to check your work.

Being aware of your surroundings all the time is a good idea not just for the memory training, but for your participation in life.

Plan and set your goals

Filed under: Goals — Kava @ 4:36 pm

Planning and setting goals is one of the most important things you can do to ensure success in life. If done correctly, it will reflect a priority list of what’s important to you and how you plan to achieve it. It is a built-in confidence booster and proof that you have achieved what you conceived.

If you take the time early in life to set long-term goals in areas of your life such as finances, career, family, artistic, sports and helping others, you can remain on course no matter what life throws at you in the way of roadblocks and detours.

In practice, goal setting is a exercise in setting life goals and then breaking them down into five year goals, one year goals, six month goals and one month goals. Finally you will have a list of Tasks for Today.

As you go through each level, take the time to prioritize them so you will know what’s most important to you. Sometimes the prioritization process will surprise you. You may find out that something you thought was important to you keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the list. At that point, it might be wise to stop and ask yourself why you’re not anxious to get started on accomplishing this goal. Maybe you’re afraid of not succeeding; maybe you’re afraid of succeeding. Either way, reprioritize your list or discard one or more of the goals and move on. Nothing says that your goals can’t change over time.

You will also want to be sure that the goals are YOUR goals; not those of your family or your spouse or the community in which you live. There is no pleasure in accomplishing something which you really didn’t want to do in the first place.

Review your goals regularly. Some people set aside 2 hours each month to go over their list, make any changes necessary and set up the daily tasks they want to accomplish.

When you are setting your goals, there are some tips to remember. You should be precise about the goal you want to achieve and about the time frame in which it is to be done. Say “I will visit the Great Wall of China in 2008” rather than “I’d like to go to China someday.”

Make your goals realistic. They should be neither too difficult to accomplish, nor too easy. The goal that makes you stretch just a little bit outside of your comfort zone is the best goal. When you accomplish the goal that you had to work for, you will not only feel the enjoyment of reaching the goal; you will be strengthened in your knowledge that you can also accomplish the next goal that you set for yourself. Don’t say “I’m going to fly like a bird.” Say instead “This year I’m going to learn to hang glide.”

Set goals based on performance, not on the outcome. Outcome goals are often beyond your control. Goals based on your personal performance are those which you can track, adjust, and accomplish. It can be very discouraging to set a goal which cannot be met because either you have no control over the outcome, or bad luck, or bad weather intervened. Say “I’m going to improve my sales record by 5% over last month”, rather than “I’m going to have the best sales record in the division.”

Planning and setting goals is a great way to stay focused on what you want out of life.

Quit your day job and start your own business

Filed under: Running own business — Kava @ 6:19 pm

If you’ve ever dreamed of telling your boss to shove it and walking away from a job you hate, saying to yourself you will now start your own business, chances are good that you won’t succeed. This is because a spur of the moment reaction shows little evidence of planning, you’ve alienated at least one of the people who could have helped you, you’ve shown you are undependable and can’t be trusted to carry things through and you’ve done no planning.

On the other hand, if you have a plan for your future that includes investing in yourself, if you know the value of using all available resources when you are just starting a business, if you are prepared to invest freely in your self with financial resources as well as passion, if you are ready to spend your time and your interest in making things work well and most of all, you won’t let the word ‘failure’ be a part of your vocabulary you WILL succeed. In fact, you already have.

There are a lot of excellent reasons for starting your own business. You may already be convinced of the benefits, but just need that extra nudge to get started. Why not make an appointment with a business mentor and bounce your idea off someone else. Every business needs a concept or a premise to begin with. Talking your plans over with a mentor may help you to see things you would only have determined through trial and error before.

While a creative concept is a good foundation for a business plan, it’s important to realize that you will need more than an idea in order to interest others in your product. You will need to perform that mental balancing act that will keep your creative concept alive and fresh while surrounding it with all the solid underpinnings, and framework that will allow it to become a viable business. If you approach your plan by writing down your picture of what your business will look like one year in the future and then flesh out the plan to incorporate each needed step, you will end up with a business plan.

Take time every day to continue the process of dreaming and implementing what you’ve dreamed. This will give you time for yourself, especially if you are able to do your dreaming while walking or jogging.

Especially if you are planning on quitting your day job, you will want to make sure you have balance in your life. You should balance working and not working, Balance things you do for fun with things you do only because you must. Take some time every single day to think about something bigger than you are and take some time every day in order to help someone smaller than you are.

Stay focused. Maintain a comprehensive plan for 1 year, 2 years and 5 years. This doesn’t mean that you never have and fun. It means that are keeping your short term and long term goals in front of you self. Have a goal just for today if you wish. Know what you want to accomplish today and do it.

Spend some time doing, not just planning. The ability to live in and enjoy life as you pass through is a precious gift and one which should be enjoyed to the fullest.

Mnemonic techniques for memory improvement

Filed under: Memory — Kava @ 4:33 pm

The most difficult part of techniques for memory improvement is remembering to use them. This is the technique which you must learn first. Probably the best method to use as a reminder to remember is to use a slogan. For instance “Don’t forget to remember” is one which could be written on a card and attached to the refrigerator or the shaving mirror. Each time you see the card or think of the slogan on the card, practice one of the memory techniques.

Mnemonic techniques for memory improvement are helpful in short term memory, but are somewhat less effective for comprehension. Sometimes though, if you just want to get through a test you may be able to use some of the techniques below for memory aids.

Acronyms are words made from the first letters of other words. For example, did you know that ‘radar’ stands for RAdio Detection And Ranging? Acronyms are an effective mnemonic technique when working with a list which does not have to be in any particular order. You will probably need to spend a little time rearranging the letters so they make an acronym which will come close to a word you recognize. Then, instead of remembering a list of 4-5 words, you only need remember one word.

Sentences are another memory technique which is similar to acronyms, only this time you make up a sentence using the first letter of each word. For example, using the acronym ‘radar’ above you could say “Randy doesn’t allow roughhousing.” This would help you remember the individual words ‘radio’ ‘detection’ ‘and’ ‘ranging.

Rhymes and songs are another method for learning sometimes complicated lists or formulas. For example if you were told to memorize Isaiah 9:6 from the Bible, could you do it? Chances are if you’ve ever heard Handel’s Messiah you could recite most of the verse. Many children learn to say their alphabet to the tune of ‘twinkle, twinkle little star”.

Loci which is a Latin term with the same root as location is a method which orators and speechmakers use to remember major subjects or key points in their speeches. Seemingly extemporaneous speakers often use the method of loci. In order to use this method, they memorize a series of locations on a path that is familiar to them. Each location can then be tied to a block of information in a speech or oration. This method allows for naturalness and unrehearsed sounding speeches without losing any of the important points which must be covered. For example if your memorized path included your living room, your porch swing, your front gate, the stop sign on the corner, the park across the street, the bandstand, and the big oak tree in the neighbors yard and you wanted to memorize the seven continents, you might visualize Uncle Sam sitting in your living room, a Bolivian Indian sitting on your porch swing, a coil of rope hanging over your front gate (your rope). At the stop sign is the Russian bear. In the park you see Simba the Lion King watching a panda bear dancing on the bandstand. In the neighbor’s oak tree is a penguin.

Chunking is the term for breaking up long string of words or numbers into small groups and using one of the other techniques. Finally no matter which memory technique you use, practice makes perfect. This is a good method for memorizing long lists, speeches, poetry or music. You simple start with one word or phrase, repeat it and add the second word or phrase, then another repeat with the third word and so on.

Decision making process

Filed under: Decisions — Jean @ 4:03 pm

The process by which a person chooses a certain path over another is called decision-making. It is a cognitive process resulting to a final choice. Decision-making is very much a part of life. If a person wants to take stock of his life and become fully responsible for his own happiness then a person must make his own life decisions.

Just the same, in corporate situations or in the work life of a person, there are decisions that must always be made. Decisions in the work place can affect one’s work and the work of others. Some major decisions can make or break one’s career. A manager may decide which path to take that will either bring the company to greater heights or will bring it to the pitfalls of loss and lower productivity.

Decision-making often entails choosing one option over one or two other options based on the perceived value of each option. Some decisions are easy to make because the values of the options can be easily determined. There are, however, choices that are difficult to make because there seems to be no truly good option or the values of all the options seem equal. Let’s not even talk about making painful decisions that may not be beneficial at first but may bring about the best results in the long run.

People use different techniques to reach a decision. Some people make a list of advantages and disadvantages of each option to clearly see which choice have more disadvantages. In the work place, some people use the SWOT technique or the evaluation of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Unimportant decisions can be made by flipping a coin or for others, by consulting astrologers, or referring to readings of the tarot cards, the zodiac signs and others. This type of decision-making process technically takes the choosing out of the person hands and leaves it to ‘signs’ or other forms of divination. Sometimes people use pure gut feel or intuition when making decisions. This is not to say that the result is often unintelligent because some people have very good intuitions.

Some decisions require more attention and caution such as company mergers and other business matters. These decisions require thorough analysis and important data from auditors, accountants and advise from legal consultants. Sometimes the decision-making passes through several levels and needs the approval of several people. One key factor in being named to a high-post in the work place is by being a good decision maker. This means that a person is objective, sensible, level headed and decisive. Decisions are made at work almost daily and good decisions result to a better bottom line for the company. Teams and not just individuals may also make decisions. Often, decisions are made based on the majority votes. Those in higher positions or those who have power can make and also over-turn decisions.

Building wealth and saving money

Filed under: Personal finance — Kava @ 5:06 pm

It has been said that building wealth is not about the amount of money you earn but the amount of money you save. You may earn thousands of dollars monthly and spend the same amount easily on unessential things or luxuries or earn a couple hundreds and save a few hundreds monthly.

Building wealth is about saving enough money to have enough for emergencies, for your nest egg and also enough money to make investments that will let you earn even more money. When you have saved enough money to allow you to live in comfort in your senior years then you will not have to work forever if you don’t want to. Saving money will also give you the flexibility to adapt to possible changes in your life and to grab investment opportunities that present them selves.

Money, personal finances and the creation of wealth are a deeply personal matter. Saving is the same thing. How much money you can save and how much money you want to save are all personal. A person may require only a couple of thousands in savings others may feel more secure having more. Only you can determine what will work for you and you do not have to feel guilty or sorry for the lifestyle you lead and how you spend your money.

The secret to saving is not in keeping whatever is left of your money after all the expenses. Usually, as long as you have the money available, you’ll find an excuse to spend it. To be able to save, you should set aside an amount for your savings, typically 10%- 20% of your earnings and limit your budget for expenses to 80%- 90%.

There are a number of ways to save money. When you have already set aside 10%- 20% for your savings then you have to find ways to make the money you have left enough for all your other expenses. To be able to do this, you can start by creating a daily expense report or diary. The list will help you determine if you are spending too much money on things that in reality you can live without. People are often surprised that they actually spend so much money on Starbucks or the more expensive carton of milk or the little “treats” they give themselves like weekly massages and other luxuries. When they make the expense diary they begin to see what areas they can spend less money on. They see that the little money they can pinch here and there when put together in a savings account will add up to a considerable amount. Savings will allow you to build your money from zero, if you keep “investing” in your savings you will notice that your money has grown in no time. Remember that money saved is money earned. Bankers and insurance agents sometimes emphasize the virtue of delayed gratification. You may not go around carrying a designer bag these days but end up spending cruises and Caribbean getaways later on.

Self motivation power

Filed under: Motivation — Kava @ 11:45 am

Self-motivation is the most important type of motivation because it does not require external motivators to push a person into action. Self-motivation is the passion, the power within every person to move forward and act to achieve the goals he or she has set for himself. It’s the internal gas, the fuel that drives a person to do things without the prodding of others.

Self-motivation is important in every aspect of a person’s life. In work, self-motivation makes a person do his tasks even without added incentives or even the supervision of a boss. Self-motivated people are able to focus on their goals and will not let little barriers stop them from fulfilling these dreams. People who are motivated know what they need to do to be successful. They look within themselves for inspiration and require only self-affirmation to become a productive member of a team. Self-motivation is especially important for people who are self-employed because keeping a productive schedule may be difficult what with all the distractions of working in a home-office environment. Procrastination is never a good thing, especially for those who are self-employed and have no one to guide them or monitor their activities.

It is known that people who have clear and definite goals find better success because they have focus. When you add self-motivation and determination to the equation then the result can only be good. Self-motivation gives a person the drive to do even the little things that are important in achieving his goal. No action is too small, as long as it is part of a grand plan.

Self-motivated individuals are also able to turn the negative into the positive. They can will themselves to action, and reinforce the positive and downplay the negative matters. Often, they are willing to face their fears and extend themselves physically and emotionally, beyond their comfort zones. Self-motivation helps people not just in their careers but also in their personal lives as people living without fear are the ones able to identify and act on opportunities that present themselves. They have good self-esteem, have high self-awareness and understand that if they do get into a pitfall that they will be able to conquer it. As a result of high self-motivation, people also experience the elimination of regret.

Like any life skill, self-motivation can be improved. It may not take overnight but with constant work, a person can improve his self-motivation soon enough. It’s all bout understanding what actions cause instant results that will result to instant gratification and what actions will take longer to bear fruit. After setting specific goals, a person must constantly remind himself that the fuel he needs to drive his life is inside him. When a person believes he can achieve things and work hard at it then he will definitely achieve great things. Hiring an inner-coach can also help a person define goals and achieve these goals. Refusing to listen to naysayers also increases self-motivation and determination and lessens hesitation.
