Turning a Hobby into a Business

Filed under: Make money — MerryS @ 2:45 pm

When many people hear the word ‘hobby’ they think of it as a small project that helps to pass the time, on a rainy afternoon. While that is true for some, there are countless individuals will turn into little hobby into a booming business. It really is possible to make a considerable profit doing something you love.

Of course the success won’t happen overnight. It will take planning and hard work just like any on the business, but with determination it will happen.

The greatest thing about turning a hobby into a business is that it probably won’t even seem like work. After all, you wouldn’t partake in your particular hobby if you didn’t enjoy doing it, right?

It is best to start out small and see how the business takes off. There is no use in investing a great deal of money into something that might not turn out to be profitable.

Research your market. If you are up against a great deal of competition, locally, consider selling your products online. The Internet provides you with a wonderful way to offer your goods to a much larger market… you even have the ability to go global, if desired.

Even know you are starting small there is no reason that you can’t think big!

Working with Family

Filed under: Advice, Common Sense — MerryS @ 6:48 pm

Have you made a decision to work with friends or family members? Many individuals find this to be a very enjoyable arrangement. However, there are countless others who find this situation to be problematic.

There are things you can do to make things run more smoothly. One of the most important things to remember is that there will be occasional disagreements no matter how hard you try to be accommodating. It’s just human nature.

In the beginning, you need to sit down and discuss things. It is much better to get things out in the open right from the start. Go over job responsibilities and tell your family member exactly what is expected from him. Explain that he will be treated just like any other employee.

If this will be a business partnership, discuss which areas he will be responsible for and the things you will be deciding on as a team. Go over things like vacation days, when he will be paid, insurance options, etc.

Unfortunately, many people who hire friends or family members are taking advantage of in some way. Don’t let this happen to you! If you are straight forward from the start, as to what is expected, things should run much more smoothly.

Taking Time Off

Filed under: Advice, Physical energy — MerryS @ 6:25 pm

Whether you are working for yourself or someone else, it is important that you take time off to relax. Constantly working or worry about your work can be very unhealthy.

Obviously, if you are working for someone else it can be more difficult to take time off. Chances are you will have to abide by a vacation schedule of some kind.

Many businesses allow their employees to ‘save up’ vacation days. It is actually better for you to take several mini vacations throughout the year, as opposed to one longer one. Even two or three days off can leave you feeling refreshed and revitalized… even if you vacation in your own backyard.

When you do take time off, don’t take your work home with you. Many individuals make that mistake. There is no point of trying to relax, when you bring the office home with you.

(If it’s absolutely necessary to get things done, while you are away, limit your work time to a couple of hours a day.)

If you work for yourself, it is usually much easier to take time off here and there. Try to occasionally schedule a four-day work week. You will be surprised how rested you will feel after three days off.

The First Rules of Cold Calling

Filed under: Effectiveness — MerryS @ 3:15 pm

Chances are, no matter what type of business you are running or involved with, it would benefit by cold calling. Cold calling is a method of marketing, which has been practiced successfully, for many years. It is the act of contacting someone that you’ve never spoken with before, an effort to gain their business.

Currently, most cold calling is done by telephone. However, there are still individuals who make their sales calls going door to door.

Telephone cold calling is more challenging today, because of the National Do Not Call Registry. Consumers, who have opted to add their telephone numbers to this list, cannot be contacted by any solicitor. Solicitors, disobeying this rule are subject to large fines.

Some business owners, who begin a cold calling campaign, go about things the wrong way. The main purpose of a cold call to set an in-person appointment to make a sale, the objective is NOT to make a sale over the phone.

The first thing that should be done, prior to any calls, is market research. Finding out all that you can about your target group can make or break a campaign. As the saying goes, ‘knowledge is power’. It certainly holds true in this case.

Zen Gardening – Desktop Style

Filed under: Success — MerryS @ 4:35 am

Acquiring wealth can sometimes be stressful. (It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it, right?) There are many ways to relieve stress. There are breathing exercises and squeeze balls and meditation techniques. But, have you ever though about playing in the sand… zen garden sand, that is.

Zen gardens originated in Japan, many MANY years ago. They have done an adequate job of relieving stress, all through the ages.

Making a desktop zen garden is very easy. In fact, only four things are needed. These four things are a tray, playground sand, small rocks and a miniature rake or small stick. No pail and shovel required.

The tray you choose should be shallow and compact enough to fit nicely on your desk. (A wooden serving tray is an excellent choice.)

Fill tray with sand, ½ inch to the top. Playground or sandbox sand is best because it has been filtered and contains no foreign debris. You can also use ‘sand art’ sand. It is available in a variety of colors. Choose different colors to correspond with different moods.

Adding the rocks, symbolize mountains. The sand symbolizes water.

Whenever you are feeling stressed, play in your garden. Re-arrange the rocks or use the stick as a pencil, of sorts. It’s always fun to write in the sand.

Why Self-Confidence is Important

Filed under: Advice, Confidence — MerryS @ 6:41 am

It you are interested in starting your own business or acquiring wealth, self confidence is important. Individuals who exhibit this trait are much more likely to succeed… in everything they do.

These same people will probably tell you that their road to success seemed less rocky, most of the time, simply because they never lost faith in their abilities.

When you are self-confident, others notice this. Potential business partners will usually be more apt to invest in your venture when you believe in yourself and what you can accomplish. Make it know to them that you are unstoppable and will deliver as promised.

Self confidence is important if and when you hit a roadblock. (We all know that no business is immune to them.) It will help you to bounce back quicker and stay on track, in regard to your original business plan.

These roadblocks might even be friends or family members who doubt your business ability and don’t want to see you get hurt. Do your best to reassure them that you are, indeed, self-confident and capable of handling problems that might come up.

This trait is equally important when it comes to other aspects of your life. Everything from relationships to education to your health and well-being is affected by your confidence level.

If you are interested in generating wealth, you need to concentrate on your work. Concentrating on a business plan is important, as well.

One of the best ways to do this is to eliminate all distractions, located within your working environment. Turn off the radio and television, close your office door and delay all unnecessary contact via telephone, etc.

Believe it or not, your concentration will probably improve when you are working in a room with adequate lighting. When the lighting is bad, you are subject to headaches, eye strain and added tension.

You want to avoid glaring, flickering, light. Optimum light is bright and even. Two 100 watt bulbs are usually adequate for the average size office.

It also helps if you are organized and vary your tasks, during any given day. You should get the proper amount of sleep, eat right and exercise regularly. All of these things can help to improve your overall concentration level.

Using Credit Cards to Start a Business

Filed under: Howto, Make money — MerryS @ 3:51 am

If you are in the process of starting a new business, you are probably most concerned with the availability of startup funds. Most individuals don’t have access to a huge bank account. If you are in this category, you must utilize other options.

One of these options is the use of credit cards. If you have a good credit history, chances are you have at least one or two of them, with sizable limits. These funds can easily be used to start a business.

This doesn’t mean you should go crazy and purchase everything under the sun. But, if you use good judgment these credit cards can make the difference in regard to whether or not you work for yourself.

( It is recommended that you choose a business that is relatively inexpensive to start, when utilizing its credit card option. You can always expand, slowly, once the original project takes off and you are starting to see a profit.)

Using credit cards also gives you extra protection against the purchase of faulty equipment. Depending on the items purchased, the warranty honored by the credit card company works out to be longer than the original one. (Think of it as an extended warranty, of sorts.)

It makes it much easier to track expenses, as well.

Make a Dream Book

Filed under: Confidence — MerryS @ 5:15 am

Goals are important, when you are trying to achieve wealth. They give you something to strive for and help to keep you focused. When you have goals you are much more likely to see success.

Many people choose to make a ‘dream book’, in addition to writing down their goals. It may sound silly at first, but it really does work. Technically, it doesn’t have to be a book. The idea works just as well in poster form.

Take the time to locate several photos of things that you really want. Do you want a boat or a new car? Maybe your dream is to take a trip around the world or build a cabin on a peaceful lake, somewhere. You might even dream of all these things.

Place these photos in a journal or display them on a poster board. For added incentive, include motivational quotes or thoughts of your own, as well.

Keep the book within reach, taking the time to browse through it often. (If you have chosen to display your photos on poster board instead, hang it above your desk.)

On those days that you feel you are going nowhere, looking at your dream book will help you get back on track and renew your faith in what you can achieve.
